The skull of the Tautavel Man, which was discovered in 1971, has a flat and receding forehead and a well-developed arch of the eyebrows. The face is big with rectangular eye sockets. The volume of the cranial cavity is 1150 cm³. The head was that of a young adult. The skeleton was reconstructed with 75 human remains that were found, as well as casts to fill in the missing pieces. The Tautavel Man's height was 1.65 m, and his bones are sturdier than those of modern day humans are. Due to the direct, non-destructive dating method that was used, his age was estimated at 450,000 years.
You may visit the large Grottos de l'Aguzou, located at the beautiful Gorges d'Aude, throughout the year with a skilled guide (approx.€ 25,-) for a tour that takes 6 to 8 hours. Don't miss a visit of the museum Tautavel, with exciting archeological founds.

Grottos of Limousis
These largest grottos of Roussillon are located in the valley of the river Clamoux near Carcassonne and Pic de Noire. You will view 8 salles, five stalagmithe-barriers and the unique aragonite cristals, which are perfectly white. The nearby located
« Gouffre Géant de Cabrespine » consists of a single huge cavern. The tour enters this chamber high on one side, allowing the visitor to look down into forrests of huge stalagmites.
The grottos will be opened from Easter Monday until 30th October.
